Your Identity will be tied to what you give your heart to
What have you allowed to have first place in your life? Has it been friends, money, sports, relationships, social status, fame? What are your priorities and how do they lineup?
These are all serious questions that have changed the way I look at my life. For so long, I allowed everyone and everything to have to first place in my life while God was at the bottom of my list. I thought that if I was the most liked person or the best softball player that somehow I would become more significant or be of more value. This way of thinking lead me to years of hurting and disappointment- wondering why what I did I was never enough to make me feel like I had value.
I specifically remember a season of my life when softball was number one on my list. So later on when I struggled in pitching, not only did I feel upset, but I also felt like I lost my worth as a person. I allowed how I did on the field to become my identity.
Putting your worth in everything but God leaves you broken because it always fails. When you allow other things to become number one in your life over the Lord, you are building on shaky ground. Christ should be our foundation because unlike everything else in our life, he is the only thing that remains consistent and unchanging regardless of circumstance.
So why do we so often choose failing things to define us rather than an unfailing God? What you give first place in your heart also reveals what you are using to fill the void that only God can. If you are not looking to God first and all things, you are placing value in something that will always fail you. If you haven’t before, I encourage you to make a list of your priorities. If God is not at the top, make a plan to really check your heart and work towards building on a firm foundation. Your identity is tied to what you give your heart to.
